Moving? Here is What You'll Need to Make Your New Place Feel Like Home

Whether you have just bought a house or you’re planning to rent a little flat for a couple of years while you save money for a mortgage, moving into a new place can be stressful.

If you’re lucky, you’ll just have to choose some furniture and start moving in all your bits and bobs. If on the other hand, your new place needs decorating, it will feel like a never-ending job. But don’t worry, you’ll get there eventually!

With moving to a new place come a lot of challenges, one of the biggest ones being “how to make the place feel more like home”?

Don’t be fooled into thinking that this is an issue only new home-owners will have to face. If you decide to rent a place and are planning to spend a few years of your life there, then you should definitely consider making it more your own.

A home is made up of many things; furniture is, of course, the most obvious one but memories are really what make it YOUR HOME.

So here are 5 tips to make your new place feel like home!

    Smells are so underrated!

When you think about spending the Sunday at your grandma’s house when you were a child, the things you probably recall most vividly are smells.

It is in fact proven that most memories are related to a particular sense and homes seem to be related mainly to the sense of smell.http://www.fifthsense.org.uk/psychology-and-smell/

You will want your new place to smell like home too. So, whether you’re a fan of Yankee candles or you're more of an incense type of person, choose a scent you would love your family and friends to associate you with and make sure to fill your home with it!

Make it artsy, if you like

There is nothing more depressing than empty walls and so you want to get rid of that as soon as you step into your new place. While furniture is the first that should go up when you’re moving homes (you need a bed to sleep on and a table to enjoy your meals), art is probably the second one on the list.

Let’s be clear, you don’t have to fill your walls with abstract paintings if that’s not what you’re into, but perhaps you could get creative with family pictures and small mementoes you have. A home is made by memories and hanging some of those around might be a great way of making your new place feel instantly a bit more like home.

    Changes can be good

Very often, minor changes are the most effective ones. Changing something as small as cupboard knobs will make your house feel more like you. Fan of minimal, sleek designs? Go for something that represents that sense of order and tidiness for you. And if you’re more of a colourful, unique type of person, then your cupboard knobs should definitely reflect that.

Plants and flowers to make it welcoming

Not everyone is a fan of indoor plants, however, if you’re looking for ways to make your house feel more welcoming, you should consider adding some fresh cut flowers, plants or even a bunch of cacti (or cactuses?)

Plants are also known for improving the air quality in your home but not everyone has enough space for them. Filling your new place with plants will make it feel cramped with stuff if you don't have a lot of square metres to work with. Freshly cut flowers are just as beautiful and welcoming as a bunch of plants and they will do the job taking up way less space.

When choosing your new plants or flowers make sure the vase or plant pot you use reflects the style of your house. Just like choosing new cupboard knobs, the container for your plants should reflect your style!

    Accessorise, accessorise and accessorise

Once all these small touches have made your place feel more homely, it’s time to make it glam!

Pillows and throws are a great way of adding a trendy touch to your rooms; an even better idea is to get two sets of them. A fluffy, cosy set of pillows, cushions and throws for the cold season and a cotton set, (perhaps with a tropical print) for the Summer. Think about how good it looks when you walk into a hotel room and the bed is covered in big, soft pillows. You want to achieve the same results in your home!

Finish decorating with some rugs and matching towels, kitchen cloths and curtains and everything in your house will work in a beautiful harmony of colours and styles.

And this is how you make your new place feel more like home.

Oh, don’t forget to fill it with the people/animals you love to create new beautiful memories in it. You will carry them with you into your next chapter!
